Jarrod
My TED Talk Story…
My story begins with a boy being born and raised in a small rural town along the rugged west coast of South Africa. Childhood was an endless adventure of roaming the bush, building treehouses, foraging in rock pools, investigating bugs/insects, riding (and falling off) my BMX, and seizing every chance to explore outside…oh and most importantly, going to school barefoot. This early love for the wild evolved naturally into my role as a mountain guide, where I now am fortunate enough to share my passion with others. With 20+ years experience in hiking and trail running, the mountains are my meditation and where I go to recalibrate and find true north. Each time I head out, I get excited and love seeing wildlife in their natural habitat.
Search & Rescue
I am a dedicated member of (Mountain) Search & Rescue South Africa, a volunteer organisation committed to helping those who are in need. The experience constantly teaches me new aspects of safe keeping in the mountains and I have gained invaluable knowledge during this process. You are in safe hands when hiking with us.
Unplugging the Keyboard
Once upon a time, I had a corporate career which afforded me the opportunity to see some of the world, for which I am very grateful. Some highlights include summiting the three highest peaks in the UK (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon) in under 24 hours, running and hiking through the majestic mountains in France and Europe. However, these brief moments simply wasn’t enough and a few years ago I decided to unplug the keyboard and embark on a calling to share my love for the outdoors. If I can encourage one person to have a renewed appreciation for hiking and nature, this is all I need from this journey we call life.
Carrie
The story of Carrie…
I was privileged to grow up with my family home’s back gate quite literally opening up onto the lower slopes of Table Mountain. We walked our dogs on the mountain, my brother and I built fortresses and bridges out of pine branches, and I learnt about wildlife such as porcupines and black sparrowhawks while exploring my back ‘garden’.
After practising as a veterinarian for eight years, this bush child returned to her first love of adventure guiding and adventure-based learning. A registered hiking and sea kayaking guide in South Africa and a Level 1 Authorised Svalbard Guide, I have five years of cumulative experience between South Africa, Norway and Svalbard.
I am passionate about facilitating immersive wilderness experiences and about fostering an appreciation of nature in the next generation. When I’m not guiding or editing a fiction manuscript, you’ll find me on the salsa dance floor or volunteering with Search and Rescue ZA (SARZA).
