What to expect from the Kasteelspoort hike?

The Kasteelspoort hike is one of the most rewarding ways to experience Table Mountain because it offers plenty of flexibility. Once we’ve reached the summit, we can tailor the rest of the hike to suit your available time, energy levels and what you’d most like to experience.

If you’d like to visit the front of Table Mountain, we can make our way across the Back Table to the Upper Cable Station before taking the cable car down. If you’re looking for something quieter and a little more adventurous, we can explore the hidden Tranquility Cracks before descending via Corridor Ravine back to Camps Bay.

Most Kasteelspoort hikes take between 4 and 5 hours, although this varies depending on the route we choose and how much time we spend enjoying the mountain. This can be reduce to 3.5 hours if needed. One thing is certain, this is a hike that rewards those who aren’t in a rush.

The Trail

The Kasteelspoort hike begins in Camps Bay and follows one of the quieter, more scenic routes to the summit of Table Mountain. The name Kasteelspoort translates from Afrikaans as “Castle’s Gate”, named after the natural gap in the cliffs through which the trail reaches the top.

We begin on a wide, well-maintained track before reaching the Pipe Track junction, where we’ll stop for a short break. From there, the trail narrows into single track as we wind our way uphill through indigenous fynbos, with spectacular views of the the Atlantic coastline.

Around 30 minutes later we’ll arrive at Breakfast Rock, a great spot to look back and admire the scenery. While this section is one of the steeper parts of the hike, it is relatively short and breaks the ascent into comfortable stages.

The final climb takes us through Castle’s Gate before emerging onto the broad summit of Table Mountain, on the “back table”. We’ll then visit one of our favourite viewpoints, the Diving Board Rock, affectionately known by us as the “Great White Shark” because of its unmistakable shape.
